Many folks have been asking us, "What's the best way to get started with Z Scale model trains?" Micros-Trains, or MTL, offers excellent Z Scale Train Starter Kits. Micro-Train sets typically include a locomotive, caboose, 4 assorted Micro-Trains Freight Cars, Oval Track Layout (approx. 17 x 20), Rerailer ramp. You will need to purchase your power pack separately. Though aimed at "beginner" train hobbyists, MTL Z scale Train Kits are most certainly not "beginner" quality!

Keeping Your Z Scale Tracks Clean

Over time, the performance of your Z engines will decrease. This is usually caused by dirty track and dirty wheels, so it's very important to keep your Z tracks clean. Because of its small size, dirt and corrosion will greatly affect electrical conductivity between the rails and your locomotive wheels. So in order to keep your trains running smoothly, it's important to clean your track periodically. Cleaning means: remove all lint which may be caught between the wheels; avoid over-lubrication; inspect the brushes and clean their guides. With new train track a light cleaning using 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and a lint free cloth should do the trick. We've found that carefully vacuuming your tracks is very beneficial too!

Gauge refers to the distance between the rails on a track. Z Scale Trains run on track whose rails are a mere 6.5 mm apart. Scale refers to a simple ratio that explains how your model train compares to a real train. That means in Z Scale, a 50-foot boxcar measures just 2 3/4 inches!
